Interesting. Traffic has changed since than. As a traffic engineer I'm a fan of trams and traffic going in different directions in the same "lane". This reminds me of the situation near "Jonction"; in Anderlues, Belgium. If you happen to drive here http://goo.gl/maps/QIoAw you can suddenly find a tram coming your way.
